It is salt that is responsible for achieving this balance. Eaten in moderation, it is life-nourishing. Consumed in excess, it increases the blood pressure as it binds with water in the blood.
Salt has got bad press in recent times due to its link to blood pressure and hypertension. Doctors believe that the salt in the processed food is more worrisome than the salt in our regular diets. Those who have hypertension must stay away from junk and processed food as it has a very high percentage of sodium.
Salt is obtained by evaporating water from salt mines or evaporation of seawater. Go out to buy salt, and you will be confronted with a range of choices. There are different kinds of salts- each with varied texture, shade, and cost. Which is better- table salt or sea salt? We put the age-old debate to rest.
No matter what kind you prefer, all salt is made of sodium chloride. Table salt is the most common variety that has been around for a long time. It is formed by evaporating natural salt, subjecting it to very high temperatures. This destroys most of its beneficial properties. It is then processed for purification, and all the other contaminants are removed. In this process, even the essential minerals, which are a part of its chemistry, are also stripped off. So that it flows freely, anti-caking agents like magnesium carbonate, silicon dioxide, and sodium aluminosilicate are added. These hamper the salt’s ability to absorb moisture from the air. Then iodine is added to it to avoid iodine-deficiency diseases.
This is the salt that is obtained from the seawater. When the sea salt is crystallized from open-air evaporation, it is usually sold at a higher cost. The vacuum evaporation method is quicker as compared to open-air evaporation as the product thus obtained is cheaper. This salt can be sold in its unrefined form or a more refined avatar. When it is coarse, it has a greyish tinge due to clay and sediment impurities. Algae, minerals, and marine bacteria add to its colour and flavour. Refined sea salt is washed to remove the minerals, sediment deposits and is purified much like the table salt. Depending on the manner in which it was crystallized, it can be flaky or not.
Sea salt has traces of iodine but not as much as iodized salt. Care must be taken that in the times that we live in, our seas and oceans are not bereft of pollution. The biggest threat is microplastics, but then they have infiltrated everything.

Fast foods are loaded with unhealthy fats that can increase LDL (bad cholesterol) levels in your body. This LDL deposits along the arteries that carry blood to your heart. The arteries become narrow and the walls become hard. Blood has to push harder to reach your heart. This triggers hypertension (high blood pressure). Also, since the passages are narrowed, very little blood is able to make its way to the heart. Those muscles of the heart that are oxygen-deprived (blood carries oxygen) slowly stop functioning. Eventually, LDL and high blood pressure trigger a heart attack or even a cardiac arrest.
Fast foods may also initiate a stroke. The LDL that accumulates in the arteries as plaque may break free. Blood will carry it to the brain where it will cause a stroke.
NAFLD is a silent killer. It can wear away your liver’s ability to function. It is not just alcohol that causes chronic liver disease but foods that pack in a lot of unhealthy fats and sugars can also damage your liver. Fast foods can cause fats to be deposited in your liver and may even trigger inflammation. If unchecked, this could lead to serious liver damage (cirrhosis). NAFLD may even cause liver cancer. Besides, fast foods have a high glycemic index, which means right after consumption, they will make your blood sugar level shoot up, the level will drop again soon. This constant fluctuation is really bad for someone with diabetes and may even trigger insulin resistance in people who do not have diabetes.

By now we all know that fast foods stuff us with calories. Our sedentary lifestyles do not allow us to burn these extra calories and the result is weight gain. Myth 2: My Diabetes is under control, so my heart is safe
Truth: There is some truth to this myth. Unchecked diabetes is a huge risk factor for heart diseases. However, just because you are taking medication for diabetes, does not mean you can rest assured that your heart is taken care of. Diabetes increases your risk of heart disease, even if your blood sugar level is well managed. You need to consult your doctor to see if you need special medication to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol levels within the normal range. Lose weight if you are obese and quit smoking immediately.
Young people also needs to take care of their heart. Not long ago, heart attacks were primarily a problem faced by older adults. It was rare for anyone younger than 40 to have a heart attack. The amount of cholesterol we need is produced by our bodies and the cholesterol that comes in through foods is in excess of the requirement. The more cholesterol-drenched foods we eat, the more the level rises. Deep-fried foods, cookies, cakes, pizzas, hamburgers and red meat are your heart’s enemies. The excess cholesterol and triglycerides eventually lead to hypertension and then heart attacks or cardiac arrest.
Myth 4: I have a family history of cardiac issues, there’s nothing I can do.
Truth: You can greatly minimize the chances of being diagnosed with Cardiovascular Diseases even if they run in your family by working on the modifiable risk factors like – body weight, lifestyle and dietary changes. Exercising regularly and basing your diet on vegetables, whole grains, fruits, soya products and skimmed milk products. At least half an hour of brisk walking, jogging, jumping rope, swimming or cycling five days a week can improve your heart health. Do not indulge in the habits of smoking and excessive alcohol intake.

Truth: Both diastolic and systolic pressure increase with age. That is why ‘normal blood pressure is not a static figure and it changes with age. Ask your doctor what should be considered a healthy BP at your age. If your doctor thinks your systolic and diastolic pressure is higher than what is normal for your age group, you will have to start taking blood pressure medicines.
